WHY GIVE TO THE Y
Since the age of 5 years old John-Paul Banks has taken the YMCA community by storm. He began his journey at the Bayer YMCA, then Monsanto, participating in youth sports and swim lessons. Due to accessibility needs, John-Paul and his family made the South City Family YMCA their home branch close to 25 years ago. Since then, the South City community has been privileged to watch John-Paul grow into the man he is today.
John-Paul’s parents Mr. & Mrs. Banks often reflect on the sense of relief they felt upon finding a place that had programs that were suitable for John-Paul. Mrs. Banks says that “outside of the support provided through the Adaptive Fitness and Swimming programs, John-Paul’s involvement in the Y on a daily basis is what his family believes was instrumental in developing his social and emotional skills.”
The confidence and independence that John-Paul has gained at the Y extends far past the 4 walls of our establishment. John-Paul is high functioning, well-equipped, and efficient part of the St. Louis City workforce. But here, at the South City Family YMCA, a place that is FOR ALL, John-Paul stands as just one example of the heights that individuals with adaptive abilities can reach when they have a place to belong.
